Run Into the New Year

Steve and I, along with my friend Cara all ran in the Run Into the New Year 10k today. What better way to usher out 2011 that with a race? Believe it or not, I have never actually raced a 10k on the roads before, and I was a little nervous about how much it was going to hurt. I ended up having a great run, and finished in an official time of 41:24, or 6:39 average. I felt like I could have pushed it a little harder at the end, but overall I’m happy. I took 8th overall female and 2nd in my age group. Cara won her age group! (She is still a youngster for another month or so).

Steve did great as well, despite not putting in too many running miles over the last few weeks.

This race closed out a great year of swimming, biking, and running for me. I just checked my totals for the year, and because I am a numbers dork, here they are:

In 2011:

1663 miles run

2035 miles biked

96 miles swam

I can’t wait to keep training and racing in 2012. I have some big plans up my sleeve, so stay tuned!

I hope you have a wonderful and safe New Year’s Eve, wherever your plans may take you! It will be a small miracle if I can stay awake until midnight, but I will try my best.

Here’s to 2012!!

Happy Christmas!

Our Christmas got off to a great start on Christmas Eve morning, when Steve and I attended the first annual Frigid Five Fun Run. Donations were to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and a $20 scored me a cozy new running hat. I ended up “winning” first female, and got a sweet homemade jingle bell medal.

The rest of the day was spent celebrating with family, and today will be more of the same as we head over to my mom’s house. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas. And please Packers, please, let’s win tonight!

Happy 4th!

Last night Captain Steve took us (me, my mother-in-law, Steve’s brother and his date) out on the boat for the big fireworks display in downtown Milwaukee.

Milwaukee really is pretty from the water.

The fireworks lasted for a full hour, and I have to admit that I dosed off a few times. It’s because I am 80 years old.

There really is no better way to enjoy the fireworks than on the water. Best view ever, and the booming sounds echoing off of the water and the buildings is awesome.

Happy 4th of July!!

Ps. Get excited because I attended a Rockin’ 80’s party on Saturday night, and there are lots of pictures. Here’s a teaser:

Coconuts ‘n cupcakes

I know you have been anxiously waiting to see what kind of cupcakes I ate this weekend, and I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. I know I wasn’t. First off, dinner on Saturday night. Steve and I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day a little early, because let’s face it, Mondays are lame. We went to Ward’s House of Prime, a steakhouse in Milwaukee. We had a Groupon and a gift certificate that we needed to use up.

I was very excited when I saw butternut squash ravioli on the menu, because that is always one of my favorites. I ordered it up with a strawberry fields salad. The salad was the bomb. It was mixed greens, fresh orange slices, fresh berries and candied pecans with a strawberry vinaigrette that I could have bathed in. Steve ordered a special filet that came with portobella mushroom ravioli, a baked potato, salad, and a side of cajun mac and cheese to share. It was a regular old carb fest at our table. When all of the food came it literally took up the whole table like it was a buffet, and I asked the waitress to snap a photo of us with all of the food. Here’s the photo she took:

At least we look good. I am really disappointed that the food did not make the photo, but oh well. Speaking of disappointed, my butternut squash ravioli was barely mediocre. It was very bland, and came in an even more bland white creamy sauce that was just not good. I guess that’s what I get for ordering ravioli from a steak joint. Steve said his steak was really good, and the portobella mushroom ravioli that came with his was amazing. I ate one and wished that I could have had that for my meal instead. The cajun mac & cheese was yummy as well.

We passed on dessert at the restaurant because of the special cupcakes that were waiting for us at home. Without further ado, I present the chocolate strawberry cupcakes, topped with chocolate ganache and a strawberry.

We were able to cork our wine from the restaurant and take it home to enjoy with dessert.

This picture is actually a lie. Before I ate the cupcake I did take the wrapper off and you know I also had some vanilla ice cream on the side. It was as delicious as it looks.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the two amazing achievements in cinema we watched over the weekend.

Breakin‘ and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo

How I missed these the first time around in the 80′s is beyond me, but I am so thankful to Netflix for allowing me witness filmmaking at it’s finest. In case you are like me and had never heard of these two gems, they are breakdancing movies from the 80′s and you must watch them immediately.

After all of the wine, carbs, cream, oil, break dancing and cupcakes, I was not feeling too enthusiastic on Sunday morning when I woke up for my 10 mile run. I had to force myself out the door, but once I got going, it was fine. Not the greatest run ever, but the temperature was pretty warm (like 40!) which made it a little better. I also knew that another cupcake was waiting for me tonight, and I better get all of my miles in if I was really going to enjoy it.

Steve and I did some running around in the afternoon, including a stop at Trader Joe’s which was a huge mistake. I have never seen a grocery store so crowded, it was unbelievable. We stopped at one other grocery store where I bought this:

A coconut! I am beyond excited about it even though I have no idea how to go about getting it opened. Hammer? Chisel? Machete?

I think I will wait for Steve to get home tonight and help me with it before I cause some major damage.

Lastly, you didn’t think I’d end this post without a picture of last night’s cupcake did you?

That would be The Snick. Oh yes, it is indeed a Snickers cupcake. The chocolate cake part had chunks of peanuts and caramel, and the frosting is caramel buttercream topped with a Snickers slice. Oh my word. It was so indulgent that I couldn’t finish the frosting. Sacreledge, I know, I just couldn’t do it. And now I know why I never get a good night’s sleep on Sunday nights. The sugar must build up over the weekend until it courses freely through my veins and resistance is futile.

What was the best thing you did this weekend?

Happy New Year!

We are not fans of going out to a restaurant or bar on New Year’s Eve. Between the crowds, obscene cover charges, and obnoxious drunks, I would much rather spend a not so quiet evening with my family. This year Steve and I attended the best slumber party ever at my aunt and uncle’s house. My huge extended family was all there, and we partied the night away. Like the wild animals we are, the night started off with the last Scrabble game of 2010.

The ladies in my family are Scrabble people. Not a get-together goes by without a game or two (often two at the same time) being played. I only agree to play if I am on a team with someone else because I do not have the attention span required to last through a game solo.

My brother and sister-in-law were in town from Philly. Aren’t they cute?

No, he doesn’t always rock the faux-hawk like that. Apparently we are only that lucky on NYE.

My family is also known to bust out with a mean dance party, no special occasion required. This is what Lady Gaga does to me.

I only had two glasses of wine. My brother and I are dancing machines.

As is my aunt Beth, who may have had more than two glasses of wine.

We did manage to take one nice normal picture to commemorate the start of the new year.

The dance party wrapped up around 2:30am, and I hit the hay air mattress. You may think the party was over at this point, but really only until breakfast. My grandma conveniently lives right next door, and upon waking this morning, all I had to do to get some monkey bread was walk across the lawn.

In case you were wondering, I once took down half of one of these babies by myself. Yes, I felt slightly ill afterwards, but I’m sure it was worth it. Nothing can beat the outer edge of cinnamon sugar buttery goodness.

After breakfast, it was obviously time to partake in the first Scrabble game of 2011. No sense in wasting any time. My team won, by the way.

I will not be working out today and can only hope to find the motivation to get my Christmas tree/decorations taken down.

Happy 2011!

What a weekend!

I love Milwaukee in the summer. Since we only have approximately 90 days of hot, glorious, sunny, summer weather per year (I’m rounding up), Milwaukeeans attempt to cram an entire year’s worth of fun outdoor activities into 12 short weekends. There is always something to do. Feel like going to a festival? Check. Fireworks? Yep. Want to sit back and relax on a boat while lazily floating down the river? Check. Want to go water skiing and tubing on a lake? Drink bloody marys outside? Go for a run or bike ride? Check. Check. Check.

And this is only a sampling of what I did this weekend. It was one of those weekends that’s so good you just don’t want it to end. Ever. It was non-stop hanging out with family and friends. It was so tiring in a good way. Like where you crash on the couch after eating a leisurly outdoor brunch and your friend has to come over and wake you up to go out on his boat. Twist my arm a little. Ok, let’s go! That’s how the whole weekend was.

I won’t go into all of the details, other than the weather was perfect, I consumed more food and alcohol than is healthy for one human, STP rocked Summerfest, and I had a blast.  All I can think about right now is lying down on the couch and taking a nap, but alas, work is not quite done for the day. So for now I will just look forward to curling up on the couch with the hubby tonight and watching a movie or three. Everyone needs some down time now and then. That is unless someone calls with a fun Monday night plan…

And the winner for most expensive restaurant ever is…

Friday night we went out for our “actual” Valentine’s dinner. I say that because we tried to get reservations at this place for the actual day, but when I called 4 days in advance, they only had openings before 5:30 or after 9:15. No thanks. We decided to postpone by a day, and I am so glad we did.

We had been waiting to eat at Carnevor for a while now, because we had a gift certificate that S got for his birthday. After hearing many rave reviews of the place, we were pretty excited to try it. I will have to say, it definitely lived up to the hype. The service was fantastic, and the food was amazing. S even commented during dinner, “When was the last time we ate at a restaurant where the service was as good as at dinner on a cruise ship?” It was true. Our waiter was so friendly and attentive. Every time you turned around, there was a staff member to take away your plates, fill your water, wipe up your mess, sweep your crumbs, or just to make sure everything was ok. At the same time, it never felt annoying, which is rare.

Now on to the food. As an appetizer, we ordered mac and cheese. Yes, mac and cheese. It was so good. The cheese sauce was made of goat, maytag, and peccorino, and the whole thing was seasoned with nutmeg and cinnamon. It was heavenly.

We each ordered a steak, me the dry aged new york strip, and S the filet. I am not a huge steak person. I only order it if we are at a fancy steak place, which is usually about once or twice a year. That said, the steak was fantastic. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and so flavorful. S could not get over his filet. He kept saying it was the best steak he has ever had. I tried a bite of his as well, and it was truly melt-in-your-mouth. Along with our slabs of meat, we also had us some exotic mushrooms, charred asparagus, and haystack onions.

My favorite part of the meal was definitely the dessert. It was a chocolate lava cake served with a side of cherry ice cream. Ohmygoditwassogood! I am drooling a little right now just thinking about it. We finished off our bottle of wine and…

Then came the bill. Thank god we had a $100 gift certificate is all I can say. The total before tip was $206! I think I had a small heart attack. This officially takes the title of “Most expensive dinner I have ever eaten.” Was it worth it? I would say so. It is very seldom that we treat ourselves to a night like this. Will we be back? Probably, it was that good. But it will have to be for a very very special occasion. Maybe we should start asking for gift certificates now…

Valentine's recap

I know I am a little bit behind with my posting, but I am going to tell you about Valentine’s day. It started when the fiance came home from work with these:

I had already prepared the dough for the homemade pizzas in my bread machine, so we were ready to go. The rolling out of the dough and stretching it into a circle in the pizza pan was slightly comical. S was actually throwing his in the air like they do at an actual pizza place. I was not so daring with mine, as I was quite sure it would end up on the floor. I also couldn’t get mine to stretch out enough to fit the pan, so S had to help me out (what would I do without him?). Anyway, here are the tasty results:

Mine:

His:

Yum. The pizzas were so good, and we decided we will be registering for those special pizza pans with the holes in the bottom to make a slightly crispier crust.

We also shared a delicious bottle of wine that we had been saving from our engagement party last summer, and we finished things off with a slice of death by chocolate cake and ice cream.

Perfect.

Happy Valentine's Day!

val_30.jpg

That’s the spirit!

Seriously though, I have never been one to get overly excited for Valentine’s day. As long as I can spend time with my fiance, that’s all that really matters to me. Tonight we will be trying our hands at homemade pizzas and relaxing with some good wine. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do.
