Moving forward

Well I can’t leave my big downer marathon post on the top of the page. I am mentally recovered now, and in a much better place. I am proud of my PR, even though I know I could have done better. Here’s the thing: we can always do better. Whether I smashed my PR or beat it by a measly 30 seconds, there is always room for improvement. I can only move forward from here and set new goals for myself. Warning – this post may be a little random.

For two days following the marathon I debated signing up for the Green Bay Marathon on the 17th. I wanted revenge, redemption, whatever. I wanted my 3:50. Three days after the marathon I came to my senses. It was it a terrible idea. Not only would it have been for the wrong reasons, but I probably would not have even been recovered enough to even run fast. I would have run a terrible race, beat myself up about it, and gone into Ironman training with a negative attitude. No thanks.

I am still sick, mostly in my sinuses. I have been waking up in the morning with a pounding headache and ear pain. Hopefully it is not a sinus infection. I don’t feel terrible any more during the day, so that’s good. I know I said I wasn’t going to run this week, but it was so nice out after work today I just wanted to get out there. I set out for a 5 miler, and 15 minutes in it started raining. I love running in the rain (when it is warm out). My legs felt pretty good, though I could feel some stinging in my quads towards the end.

What I do not love – gnats. There are massive swarms of gnats all around the lakefront. They attack without warning and usually when your mouth is open. Yum! And they end up in places. When I got home, the little buggers were plastered to my face, under my shirt, and even in my sports bra. Delightful.

I wish I never had to hear Brett Favre’s name in the news again. Pathetic dickhole.

I am obsessed with going on a Caribbean cruise later this year (like November), even though there is no way we can possibly afford it. I found a really good deal on a balcony cabin, and lord knows I love a good deal. The problem comes in when the great deal still involves dropping a couple grand. But oh how I long for the beach, the sun, coconuts, pineapples, palm trees, and rum drinks. I get a little giddy just thinking about it.

That is all, carry on…

Between Seasons

Wow, I guess I suck at the whole blog thing lately. It’s been about a month since I posted anything, and though a lot has been going on, I don’t feel I have a whole lot to say about it.

I could report about my awesome trip to Washington DC in which my brute strength was able to keep this giant rock from crushing everyone in sight:

Or how my brother narrowly escaped being crushed by this huge boulder:

Or I could report about my subsequent trip to Door County for which I slacked on my photo documentation and have no photos to share.

But those things seem so long ago, a reminder that summer is coming to an end. Right now we are at the stage between summer and fall, where temperatures are cooler but not yet crisp. I’m sure I am being melodramatic and we will have a scattering of warm days ahead of us before everything turns brown and dies, I just hate when summer comes to an end. It means no more lazy days spent on the boat, and no more hot nights to lounge out on the balcony sipping wine.

There is an upside to all of this, and that is perfect running weather. It is no longer so hot that you actually feel your face pulsating with every step, or your skin scorching out in the sun. I got in a glorious 20 miles yesterday, which I will attribute to the weather. A ton of people showed up for the group run. It was the first time I made it to the weekly group run this year, and I forgot how fun it was. There’s something I love about what seemed like 100 people all getting together at 7am on a Saturday to crank out 20-22 miles. I was in my element.

After the run, I spotted Julia and Krista, and went over to say hi. Hopefully they didn’t think I was a creepy stalker when I walked up and said “Hi, I know you guys!” It’s weird when you only “know” someone through their blog, and then you meet them in person. Their blogs are two of my favorites, and I hope to see them running in the future, and maybe even get to know them a little better “in real life.”

Finally, a shout out to everyone doing Ironman WI today! I wanted to get to Madison to watch, but it wasn’t in the cards. This means I have approximately 24 hours to decide if I am going to sign up for IM WI 2009. I am leaning towards it, but I have a few reservations, namely the $500 entry fee. Oh, and the fact that I would pretty much have to give up my summer next year to train. Details, details…

LC

As of today, I am officially no longer LW. I spent the entire morning at the SS office, the DMV (awesome!) and the bank. From this day forward, I guess I will be known as LC.

The SS office was painless. There was only one person ahead of me, so I only had to wait about 5 minutes. I handed over my documents, got my receipt, and was on my merry way.

The way became less merry right about the time I walked into the DMV (aka hell on earth). Over the past few years, I have spent entirely too much time in these establishments. Two summers ago I got my motorcycle license (that required two trips). Then at the end of 2007 my license expired, so I had to go again. It is worth noting that during that trip, the fire alarm in the DMV went off no less than three times, once after I had actually made it up to the window and was in the middle of my transaction. Each time all patrons were herded outside into the parking lot while we waited for the fire trucks. THREE times.

I digress. Upon entering today, I promptly checked the scrolling sign, which notified me that the waiting time was 21 minutes. Not bad. I filled out my papers and sat down. I looked at the board and was elated when I saw my section was on number 230. I was 234. I waited. They called number 231 fairly quickly. Sweet! I waited some more. 25 minutes go by before they called 232. I was getting pissed. 21 minutes my ass, douchbags! A child was screaming at the top of his lungs non-stop. A woman from the DMV went over to the mother and let her skip everyone and go next, for the sanity of the other 950 people in the room. 50 minutes after I walked through the door my number was finally called. I took care of business, got my photo taken (why does my face always end up looking like an oil slick in these photos?) and got the hell out of there and into my eleventy billion degree car that was baking in the 90 degree sun. Ahhh, air conditioning.

I headed to the bank, which was quick, and with that, I was LC. For the past three weeks, people have been asking me if it feels any different to be married. I always reply no, it doesn’t at all. We’ve been all happy and giddy, but we have already been living together for the past few years, so what would be different? The name thing though, I have to say it’s a little weird. I had a pretty cool last name, in fact all of my past nicknames have been based on it. Lot’s of people actually call me LW. LC doesn’t seem to have the same ring to it. Not yet anyway. And let’s talk about my new signature. It sucks, to put it mildly. I always mess it up at the end, and it looks like perhaps a third grader wrote it while practicing cursive in their penmanship workbook. I will get used to it, I know, but for now I am entertaining the idea of getting a cool tattoo that somehow incorporates a “W”, just so it can always be a part of me. Lame? Maybe, but I like the thought.

Oh Johnny, how I love thee

So I am almost positive I ran past Johnny Depp’s movie trailer today.

I may or may not have peed a little.

I read the other day that the Public Enemies film crew had applied for permits to occupy the curbs of several downtown streets. After I read the article, I promptly forgot about it, because well, I’ve had a few things on my mind lately. So imagine my surprise when I was running along Prospect Ave only to look up and see a barrage of large vehicles, semi tractor-trailers, and actor trailers parked along the street with orange cones all over the place and complete with people from local businesses standing in the middle of the sidewalk gawking.

That’s when my memory of the filming was jogged (pun intended) and I kicked into Johnny stalking high-alert mode. Ok, so there were no actual movie people to be seen anywhere, but I did spot one trailer (actually let’s call it more of a tour bus without the front end) that was much nicer than all of the rest. Johnny’s I’m sure. (Really I’m not sure at all and am probably wrong about all of this, but for the sake of my story, it was his, damnit!).

Suddenly I had daydreams of knocking on the door, or maybe just trying to peek into the window. Creepy much? Anyways, Johnny would answer, and I would say “Hi Johnny Depp, do you have any water in there?” He would pull an ice cold bottle out of the fridge, I would drip sweat all over his floor, we would chat for a bit, I would invite him to my wedding, he would say he’d try and stop by. Swoon!

By this time I was home and already plotting my running route for tomorrow to take me within distance of a possible Johnny sighting. I’m sure it won’t happen, but it will be damn good motivation to get me through the swim and bike portions of tomorrow’s brick workout.

Sunday list

So I haven’t blogged in a while, and lets just say I’ve been a little busy. A lot has been going on, so I’m going to make a list. Here goes.

-I am getting married in less than 5 weeks (what?!?!). We had a “walk through” at our venue the other day where I was told we would have to pay $200 for 8 (eight) tablecloths for the cocktail hour. The woman must have been on crack. I told her it wasn’t going to happen. Take that!Seriously though, could I please just get married without going into major debt in the process?? I know, I know, it’s our own fault for planning the wedding we did (which is by no means extravagant in the first place), but come on, some of this stuff is just ridiculous.

-We have decided on our honeymoon destination! Drumroll please…Belize!

The bottom picture is the blue hole, and yes, we will go diving 150 feet down into that sucker! We will spend 5 nights on Ambergris Caye for the diving, and then 4 nights in the interior exploring jungle, waterfalls, caves, and Mayan Ruins. Oh, and we can rent this private waterfall for the day:

Now for the bad news. After listing out everything that we owe for the wedding, we don’t know if we can actually afford this trip. We aren’t planning to go until November, so we are going to wait until after the wedding and see where we stand.

-I went to the Y for a swim Friday morning, and I saw the most curious thing I have ever seen in the pool there. It was a man, perhaps 25-30, tall and lanky. He was wearing a shortie wetsuit in a pool where the temperature probably averages around 84 degrees. He was also wearing a bright red life jacket, mask, snorkel, and fins. He was face down in the water holding 2 floating foam dumbells out in front of him. He was ever-so-slowly making his way from one end of the pool to the other with his flippers. I wondered if he was meditating and transferring his mind to the ocean. I wondered if he saw fish. I started to imagine that I was in the ocean seeing fish. It was quite pleasant actually.

-I have gotten a lot of training in during the past few days. Friday was a brick: 1 hour swim, 1 hour bike, 45 min run. Saturday was a 3.5 hour bike. Sunday is a day of rest. I am contemplating signing up for the Trek 100 bike ride on June 7th, so I am really trying to ramp up my riding in preparation.

-Gas is $3.99 a gallon. WTF? Thank God I don’t have to drive to work.

-I am going to see the new Indiana Jones movie on Memorial Day with a bunch of people from my family. We have VIP reserved seating in the theatre, which means we won’t have to get there 2 hours early to try and get seats. In preparation, I plan to rent the first three movies today and have a movie marathon, because my recolection of these films is a bit fuzzy.

-I think that’s all I’ve got. Enjoy your Sunday!

The rain won't get me down

It is pouring rain and I am exhausted, but I am excited for this weekend! I had a great swim this morning after pretty much a full week of slacking off. I am supposed to run today as well, but the weather looks like it has other plans for me, which is ok. It is a rest week, after all.

I just returned from the post office, where I spent $99.60 on stamps. Wedding invites are going out tomorrow, and I absolutely cannot wait until I don’t have to look at them sitting on my desk anymore. There are piles everywhere. Invites, envelopes, response cards, map cards, response envelopes. It has been making me itch for the past few days all of this clutter, and I am going to spend the afternoon stuffing envelopes and sticking stamps, turning everything into one neat, orderly pile that will go to the post office tomorrow.

Tomorrow is also my bridal shower. There will be margaritas. Need I say more? There will also be homemade enchiladas, taco salad, guacamole, rice and beans. Not mention all of the ladies I am closest to. My best friend (and also a bridesmaid) lives in California and can’t make it, so she will be missed, but I can’t wait to see her in seven short weeks for the wedding. Yikes, seven weeks! Did I mention there will be margaritas?

Then Sunday is my first outdoor soccer game of the year. Looks like it could be chilly, but hopefully it will at least be done raining by then. Well, that’s all I’ve got. Hopefully I will remember to bring my camera tomorrow so I can post some pictures of the margarita fest bridal shower. Have a great weekend!

What the?!?

I woke up early this morning and went to get out of bed. As I bent my knee, there was throbbing pain. This isn’t that unusual an occurance, so I thought back to what training I did yesterday, and my internal pre-coffee dialogue went something like this.

Oh, it must be from running. Wait, I didn’t run yesterday. Oh yeah that’s right. Well then it must be from soccer. That usually does it. Wait, I didn’t play soccer yesterday. Biking? Nope. In fact, I did not work out yesterday at all. (I take the term “rest week” very seriously).  What the hell??

Then it hit me.

Kickball.

Yup, that’s right. My knee is sore from a rousing 9 innings of kickball. Yes, the grade school game you played at recess. So much so that I did not run today either, and have been hobbling around like a 70 year old. Pathetic much?

Here is the headline:

“Local girl unable to compete in half-ironman due to injuries sustained while playing a playgound game invented for 10-year-olds in which you kick a big red ball and sprint around bases trying not to get hit with said ball.”

Nice. Maybe I need to cut back on the extra-curriculars.

100 Things

It has been 3 weeks since my last post. To my 2 or 3 readers out there, I apologize. Work, training, and wedding planning has taken over my life. Anyways, I figured I’d better come back with something good, so without further ado, here are 100 things about me:

1.       I was born at 11:59 pm. Since I started to pop out before midnight and finished after, they gave my parents the choice of my birthday being October 18th or 19th.

2.       They picked October 18th.

3.       I was a total tomboy when I was younger, and into all sports.

4.       During the summer Olympics, I would put on my gymnastics leotard and do moves in the living room while watching gymnastics.

5.       I hate cheesecake.

6.       I have an equal hatred for water chestnuts. It’s a texture thing.

7.       Other than that, I am not a picky eater and will eat almost anything.

8.       When I was little, I had a recurring dream that I was falling and falling down the basement stairs. When I would get to the bottom, I would jolt awake in bed.

9.       I once woke up and found myself under the bed.

10.   I am extremely right-side dominant. Writing, kicking, throwing, you name it. I even have to sleep on the right side of the bed. My left side is actually pretty useless.

11.   I am terrified of spiders and centipedes.

12.   I also have an irrational fear of being attacked by a goose while running.

13.   I run a lot.

14.   I am very emotional. Almost anything can make me cry, and things affect me very deeply.

15.   I love the ocean, particularly the Caribbean.

16.   I learned to SCUBA dive last year.

17.   If I hadn’t majored in film in college, I would have majored in geology to be able to study oceanography.

18.   I could also hold a degree in the art of procrastination. In fact, I am probably putting something else off in order to write this.

19.   I took piano lessons for 12 years, and to this day I regret giving it up.

20.   I have also played the violin, flute, alto sax, and baritone sax.

21.   I love camping. And just being outside in general.

22.   I hate winter and question why I live in Wisconsin on almost a daily basis.

23.   Then I remember that it is because I have the best family ever, and I am too attached to ever move far away.

24.   I have moved 10 times in the past 10 years, the furthest away being Minneapolis for my first year of college.

25.   I hate moving.

26.   My fiancé and I bought a condo last year, so hopefully I won’t be moving again for at least several years.

27.   I ride a motorcycle.

28.   I have run 6 marathons.

29.   I am getting into the sport of triathlon this year.

30.   My ultimate goal is to complete Ironman WI, tentatively slated for 2009.

31.   That scares the crap out of me.

32.   One of my favorite books is Into Thin Airby Jon Krakauer.

33.   I used to dream of climbing Mt. Everest. Now, not so much. But I am still fascinated by it.

34.   I was a vegetarian for 10 years. Now, not so much.

35.   My favorite movie of all time is The Neverending Story (see blog title).

36.   My second favorite is Rain Man.

37.   I love to read, but once I finish a book, it often takes me months to start a new one.

38.   I shaved my head during my junior year of high school and told my mom the soccer team held me down and forced me to do it.

39.   That was a lie. Really I was just a pretty weird kid and wanted to shave my head.

40.   I was mistaken for a boy more than once during the months that followed.

41.   I was a wannabe skater for several years. I had the baggy pants and punk rock shirts, but I was too chicken to actually ever get on a skateboard.

42.   My cousin and I also wanted to be “aggressive skaters” with our rollerblades. He would grind on curbs and do jumps. I was too chicken.

43.   I was, however, a real punk rocker. I have attended countless punk rock shows in dingy, disgusting venues. Awesome.

44.   I worry about money constantly. Even if I had a lot of it, I would probably still worry about it.

45.   I am a worrier in general. About morbid things too, like people close to me dying in a horrific accident. I hate this, but I can’t help it.

46.   I consider myself a morning person.

47.   I never thought I would say that.

48.   I need to have a cup of coffee in the morning in order to function. Sometimes another one in the afternoon.

49.   I am the lightest sleeper I know. My fiancé likes to say that if a mouse farted outside on the sidewalk it would wake me up.

50.   I have taken to sleeping with earplugs. They work wonders.

51.   I am extremely shy around people I don’t know.

52.   However, once I know you, I cannot shut up.

53.   I am sort of a goof ball most of the time. Some call this being weird, I call it having a sense of humor.

54.   My favorite foods in no particular order are pizza, mint chocolate chip ice cream, sushi, tacos, and bloody marys.

55.   I consider bloody mary it’s own food group, and I can make a killer one.

56.   I like to sing in the car.

57.   I have a terrible singing voice. Terrible.

58.   At least I know this and would never attempt to try out for American Idol.

59.   I don’t eat the ends of bananas. They also must be at a perfect stage of ripeness, just yellow with only one or two brown dots. Overripe bananas gross me out.

60.   I ran my first marathon in Alaska, and raised $4200 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the process.

61.   It was one of my best experiences to date.

62.   I love my DVR.

63.   The shows I am addicted to in no particular order are Lost, Oprah, Grey’s Anatomy, House, What Not to Wear, and the Suze Orman Show.

64.   I realize this makes me a total nerd.

65.   I love technology, and would not know how to function in daily life without the internet.

66.   I find this fact disturbing and pathetic.

67.   I have a cat named Zooey, and I love her like she is my kid. Seriously, it’s bad.

68.   I am serious about recycling. I will dig a can out of the kitchen garbage to recycle it.

69.   It pains me to admit that I do not yet have re-usable shopping bags.

70.   I am a bargain hunter. I pretty much cannot bring myself to pay full price for anything, and I love getting a deal.

71.   I keep trying to like soy milk, but I just don’t.

72.   I don’t like sitting around with nothing to do. I need a plan for the day and I like to feel productive.

73.   Sometimes though, something to do includes lying in front of the TV and taking a nap.

74.   I consider my mom to be one of my best friends. She is the only person that I really talk to a lot on the phone.

75.   In general, I don’t like talking on the phone.

76.   I used to hate texting, but it has grown on me and I’m pretty good at it now.

77.   I was so mean to my little brother while we were growing up.

78.   Now we get along great and I attribute his success in life to having overcome the abuse from his evil sister.

79.   My brother is awesome, and way smarter than me, Mr. MIT graduate works with nuclear power engineer.

80.   I am awful at making decisions, and my fiancé is incredibly indecisive. This leads to many nights spent at home playing Guitar Hero.

81.   I am not capable of staying awake on the couch for an entire movie. It’s like a Pavlovian response. A movie comes on, I fall asleep.

82.   I don’t usually fall asleep in the theatre, but it has happened.

83.   My favorite holiday is Christmas, but I hate Christmas shopping.

84.   I am not into politics. At all. I wish I was more into it, because I feel it’s important, but I’m just not.  I do vote though, which counts for something.

85.   I love breakfast food, and I love having “breakfast for dinner.”

86.   I wish I cooked more, but I am not good at meal planning and grocery shopping for actual meal items.

87.   I love going out to eat, but I always feel guilty for spending the money (see number 44).

88.   I can’t stand the way most people drive.

89.   I don’t really like driving in general, especially at night.

90.   I have terrible night vision.

91.   I love learning about the human body. I wish I could have one of those full body scans where they can tell you everything you’d ever want to know about your insides.

92.   When I have a weird thought about something, I often wonder if someone else somewhere in the world has thought that exact same thought.

93.   One of my biggest goals is to live to be 100. I realize this is unlikely, but it would be pretty awesome.

94.   I love music. I could never name an absolute favorite band or song because there are just too many, and my answer would probably change on a daily basis.

95.   I love to travel more than anything. If I has unlimited funds, I think I would constantly be travelling somewhere new.

96.   I have always been the type to have a few close friends as opposed to many acquaintances.

97.   I have no tolerance for intolerance.

98.   I can’t believe you are still reading this.

99.   I think regret is a waste of time, but I definitely have some.

100. There you have it, that’s me in a nutshell. Thanks for reading and stay tuned…

Shorts and a T-shirt

That’s what I ran in today. Outside. The tempurature reached 64 degrees today in Milwaukee and it was beautiful. The lakefront was a buzz of activity, just like summer. There were kite-surfers in Lake Michigan, families on the walking path and in the park, and all kinds of runners and bikers that were finally able to emerge from seemingly eternal hibernation.

Though I didn’t feel too great during my run (see last post), the weather was more than enough to make up for it, and make me glad that I decided to get out and do something.

I am now sitting in my condo with the windows open, breathing the fresh air and loving it. Spring has finally arrived for real, and it makes me so happy!

I rock hardcore

Yesterday was a glorious day in the LW household. With a $10 Best Buy coupon about to expire, and a small gift card left over from Christmas, I decided that it was time for Guitar Hero III for the Wii. I have been wanting this game forever, but could never justify actually paying for it. Well, I am not one to waste a $10 coupon, so there I had my excuse.

It was ever-so-difficult to get any work done in the afternoon knowing that my new shiny plastic guitar was patiently waiting for me in the next room. But alas, I exhibited incredible self-control and managed to finish what I needed to get done. My original plan was to wait until S got home from work to start rockin’ out, but when he called and said he would be late, I could not contain myself any longer.

I fired up the Wii and took my rock stance. I was prompted to create a band name. Oh my god, I love this. I named my band “R-Tex Sinking,” after my favorite movie…you guessed it, Neverending Story.  I am a total dork, I know. Then I needed to pick a character. This is me:

wii.jpg

She is so hot and bad-ass. Now I was ready.

And the rocking commenced. I busted through some Sex Pistols and Foghat. Pearl Jam and Weezer. The Killers. This is all too much awesomeness. I am addicted.

When S finally got home from work I was deep into a classic cut from The Who. He laughed at me. “Just wait” I thought. “Once you try it, you will know.”

I eventually had to take a break and make dinner. That’s when S picked up the guitar. He jammed out a few songs while I was cooking, seemed into it but not thatinto it. I finished cooking and we turned off the Wii in favor of the TV while we were eating. Terrible, I know, but we must be wired into some form of technology at all times. We watched a movie, and as is often the case, I went to bed first. I am not nocturnal by nature, and I tend to just fall asleep if I am up late watching TV.

S is the opposite. He will stay up until all hours of the night on the weekends and sleep in until early afternoon, whereas I can’t sleep past 8 or 9 no matter how hard I try. What often happens is he falls asleep on the couch, and I wake up around 3am, get up and turn off the TV, and go back to bed. (Sheesh, this all sounds pathetic, and we’re not even married yet). So last night was no different. I woke up at 3:15. I got up and went into the living room to turn off the TV. S is not sleeping.

He is playing Guitar Hero. You have got to be kidding me. Before I was all the way in the room, I hear “It’s not my fault, you bought it!” He is obsessed. I rolled my eyes and went back to bed. At 4am I wake up again. I go into the living room.

He is still playing Guitar Hero. This is ridiculous. I tell him it is time for bed. He has to just show me one more song. I watch. I tell him I am going to activate the parental controls. He finally comes to bed.

Fast forward to now. He is playing Guitar Hero. He just yelled to me that you get more money if you get a better score on a song. I am hearing Slowride for the third time in a row. I have created a monster.

Suffice to say, at least we will be saving money by staying in on the weekends.
